All The Above? What?

All The Above is the sometimes comical, sometimes inspirational and sometimes educational blog and website of Fernando Alcantara. Fernando, a jack of all trades, provides insight and humorous anecdotes from his life and explorations of the things he finds interesting.

All The Above refers to the absurdity of our lives, likening it to a multiple choice test. As in life, there is usually no clear-cut, singular answer to all our questions. If only every question in the multiple choice test that is our lives, had an All The Above box, I would check it.

All The Above is about life and all that is has to offer. From the mundane and trivial to the so-called purposeful and insightful.
Thanks for reading, and check All The Above.

Allow Me To Introduce Myself...

My name is Fernando.

Hi, I'm Fernando Alcantara and I write All The Above, a personal blog which focuses on the hobbies and interests which I am most passionate about. Mainly, health and fitness.

Having been a chubby kid that grew up to become a fat adult, I have single-handedly transformed by body into a much more efficient, leaner and healthier body than I have ever had in my life. This transformation did not happen once. It happened twice! My first experience at weight loss came in my early 20's when I had ballooned up to a staggering 230 pounds at close to 30% body fat. (I am only 5'7") Through a misguided diet with the then-popular Atkins' Diet and bodybuilding techniques, I whittled myself down to a lean and mean 175 pounds at 15% body fat. Unfortunately, as most who have attempted the Atkins' Diet can attest to, the Atkin's Diet does not promote a balanced diet which eventually led to gradual weight gain as I started to incoporate real food into my diet and the treacherousness of bodybuilding eventually became dissatisfying. Entering my late 20's and now my early 30's, I found myself back up to 205 pounds and my body fat back up 25%. Unhappy with where I had let myself go, I vowed on my 30th birthday to take care of myself, rediscover my fitness and no longer make excuses for myself. I discovered a love for running which turned into an obsession which turned into running 3 events in my first year of running: a 10K, and two half marathons, all within 1 calendar year. The running alone took 20 pounds off my frame, but, I was not satisfied. I wanted to be leaner. Earlier this year, I discovered Crossfit, a principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide. The tenet behind Crossfit is that ANYONE can do this and NOTHING else is like it. After 6 months of Crossfit, I went from 185 pounds at 20% body fat to 170 pounds at 15% body fat. When I first started Crossfit, I couldn't do a pull up. I can now do about 8 strict-form pull ups and even my running has benefited from the addition of these workouts.

With All The Above, I look forward to sharing my experiences with my running and weight loss, provide tips on how I stay motivated and help those who need motivation with their fitness endeavors.
